Infant care is the hardest daycare spot to get, and the one parents research with the most anxiety. Both things are true for the same reason: New Jersey caps infant rooms at one teacher for every four babies, so a licensed infant room fills faster than any other room in a center. If you’re expecting, the time to tour is before the baby arrives, not after your leave runs out.
Here is what to ask on any infant-room tour, what a good answer sounds like, and how our own infant room, the Muppet Babies room at Magical Palace of Wayne, answers each one.
Ratios and staffing
How many babies per teacher?
New Jersey law (N.J.A.C. 3A:52-4.3) sets the maximum at 1:4 for children under 18 months. That’s a ceiling, not a target. Ask how the room is actually staffed at the busiest times of day: early morning drop-off, lunch, and the end of the day. A center should answer with numbers, not adjectives.
Who will actually be with my baby?
Ask about the specific teachers in the room: their experience, how long they’ve been at the center, and what happens when someone is out sick. At Magical Palace, everyone on staff is background-checked and CPR-certified, and our teachers hold master’s and bachelor’s degrees in education. Continuity matters most for infants. Babies attach to familiar people, so low turnover in the infant room is worth more than any feature on a brochure.
Sleep and safety
How do babies sleep?
The only acceptable answer follows safe-sleep practice: babies on their backs, in a crib, with nothing soft in the crib with them, meaning no blankets, pillows, or stuffed animals. Ask to see the sleep area on your tour, and ask how staff check on sleeping babies. If a center lets babies sleep in swings or car seats as a routine, that’s a walk-away.
How secure is the building?
Ask how people get in. Our entry is by fingerprint sensor, the building is covered by security cameras, and pickup follows a sign-in/sign-out routine. For an infant room, also ask who is allowed to pick up your child and how the center verifies them. The answer should be a process, not a shrug.
Feeding
Who provides bottles and food?
Policies vary, and this surprises parents: at Magical Palace, we don’t provide food or formula for infants. Parents send bottles and food labeled for their baby, and our teachers follow each family’s feeding schedule and instructions as closely as possible. Our optional food program, serving lunch and dinner, starts at 12 months at an additional cost, and the whole center is nut-free. Whatever center you tour, ask how bottles are stored, warmed, and tracked, and how feeding times are logged.
Communication
How will I know how my baby’s day went?
You should get a daily record of feedings, naps, and diapers, not a verbal summary at pickup. We use the Procare parent app, so parents can follow their baby’s day as it happens. On your tour, ask to see a sample daily report. A center that tracks carefully can show you; one that doesn’t will change the subject.
The room itself
What does the room look like at baby height?
Get down to floor level, literally or mentally. Our Muppet Babies room is built for babies who can’t walk yet: a padded play yard, a low feeding table with baby seats, soft toys, and plenty of open floor for tummy time and first crawls. Ask any center how much of the day babies spend on the floor versus in seats and swings. Floor time is where development happens.
Timing and next steps
When should I reserve a spot?
Earlier than feels reasonable. Because of the 1:4 ratio, infant rooms have the fewest spots and the longest waits. Touring during pregnancy and reserving for your return-to-work date is normal, not eager. Ask what a reservation requires and what happens if your dates shift.
What happens at 18 months?
Babies age out of infant rooms. At Magical Palace, children move up to our Waddler room (18 months to 2½ years), then Toddler, Preschool, and Pre-K in the same building: one center from six weeks through kindergarten, plus aftercare to age 13. Ask any center what the transition looks like and whether a spot in the next room is guaranteed.
If cost is part of your decision, start with our guide to the 4Cs child care subsidy in Passaic County. Magical Palace accepts child care assistance through both 4Cs of Passaic County and Programs for Parents, and we offer sibling discounts.
